Synopsis: Halloween is a 1978 American Independent horror film directed and scored by John Carpenter. The plot is set in the fictional midwestern town of Haddonfield, Illinois. On Halloween night in 1963, a six-year-old Michael Myers murders his older sister by stabbing her with a kitchen knife. Fifteen years later he escapes the psychiatric hospital in thirst of more blood. He stalks teenager Laurie Strode (played by Jamie Lee Curtis) in attempts to kill her and her friends. Curtis and the fictional character Michael Myers became household names after this nerve-racking thriller.

5. Saw

Synopsis: Saw is an independent horror film directed by James Wan in 2004. The film is an instant success and was made into a seven part movie series. The film’s story revolves around Adam and Lawrence, two men who are chained in a bathroom and are each given instructions via a microcassette recorder explaining how to escape. Adam is told he must escape the bathroom, while Lawrence is told to kill Adam before a certain time, or his family will die. The movie sways back and forth with flashbacks on why the people are in the room, present moment commentary from the characters and police who are investigating the case. The movie gained a cult following and has grossed over 100 million worldwide. The film will be re-released by Lionsgate for one week this Halloween in honor of its ten year anniversary.
